For best results grow Carpinus betulus in moist but well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade.
The European hornbeam has densely textured foliage and handsome, slate-gray smooth to fluted bark. The dark green leaves turn an attractive yellow in the fall, and the bark and buds are ornamental in winter.
Common Uses: Fuelwood, flooring, veneer, musical instruments (percussion), wheels, handles, shafts, turned objects, and other small wood parts. Comments: So named, either 1) because one of its original uses was as an ox yoke, or 2) the wood was reputed to be as hard and tough as a horn.
Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) is a fast growing, green leaved plant that comes into leaf slowly throughout April, with the leaves turning brown in October. It then holds its dead leaves throughout winter.. . . . .364011234044!]0000000000000009783314144584!]
