Formed in the late 80s, few could have known that US band Mercury Rev would end up having quite such an impact. Even the band themselves when quizzed on their huge European success seem surprised, when they released 'Deserters Songs' the assumed it would be their last having never really achieved the popularity they needed and were expecting to break up following its release. How wrong they were though, the album was quickly picked up by the UK music press and rightly hailed as a classic with its carefully measured fusion of indie rock, dream pop and psychedelia - this was nothing new for the band but this time around it just seemed to fit right in. Before 'Deserters Songs' though, there was a lot more material from the band, and their first two releases are collected here on this bumper 2cd and dvd set from the Mint label, repackaged for our listening pleasure. Released in 1991 'Yerself is Steam' was an introduction to a quite singular US act, although they had links both stylistically and due to bassist Dave Fridmann's production role with The Flaming Lips, they didn't really sound exactly like anyone else. With a liberal slice of UK dream pop, a large helping of US psychedelia and a sprinkling of the trendy space rock of the era (bands like Spacemen 3 and Spiritualised) they produced an album that even now sounds like little else. In fact for someone who has only heard the band's later work it might be a shock to hear a track like 'Very Sleepy Rivers' or 'Chasing a Bee', long-form psychedelic rambles punctuated by the band's original singer David Baker. Baker's voice was markedly different from Jonathan Donahue's, and he allegedly encouraged the band's more experimental leanings but at the time and on these two records especially it really paid off. 'Lego My Ego' was a long-form EP released in 1992 and continued to explore the themes of the band's debut (even featuring a different version of stand-out track 'Coney Island Cylcone') and stands up now as the perfect counterpart. Still more experimental and defiant than the band's following albums, and with much more in common with the UK shoegaze/dream pop scene (which is still experiencing a renaissance thanks to acts such as Ulrich Schnauss, M83 and Jesu) there should be plenty here for newcomers to get absorbed into. Also for fans of the band who might need an extra reason to re-buy the albums there's a special bonus DVD featuring videos to 'Chasing a Bee' and 'Car Wash Hair'. Huge recommendation!
