This operation takes time and requires a great deal of precision and care. After the cork has been stripped from the tree the last digit of the year in which the tree was stripped is painted on the trunk to identify the year of the last stripping. The cork is selected and stacked at the forestry holdings and may remain there for as much as a year after being removed from the tree.
