Written by the former Head of the British Advisory Mission in Vietnam who has served as President Nixon's special advisor on the Vietnam war, the book discusses those revolutionary activities that have become major movements in virtually every part of the world, beginning with Greece in 1945, and continuing through to Vietnam.
The prime characteristics of revolutionary strategy, the requirements necessary for a revolutionary movement's eventual success, and the tactics by which a revolutionary war is waged are lucidly outlined. It becomes apparent that even minor revolutionary uprisings in certain countries follow the same guidelines and principles that have made other, more important revolts succeed.
Writes the author: 'Out of the 149 serious outbreaks of violence between 1958 and 1966, communists were involved in only fifty-eight and in seven of those they were themselves the target of the uprisings. It is, however, possible to wage a revolutionary war without direct communist sponsorship or involvement. In fact revolutionary war, in the sense in which we are dealing with it in this book, can be broadly divided into three types: those carried out under the leadership of the communist party, as in the two Vietnam wars; those which after victory resulted in the communist party gaining the leadership, as in Cuba (where Fidel Castro did not openly declare that he was a Marxist until he had won); and those in which any communist involvement is denied or even opposed but which may in the end advance the communist cause, as in Algeria.
'But the question remains whether the promotion of revolutionary wars has been part of a consistent policy or to what extent such wars are partly a natural symptom of our times. An analysis must also be made of their effectiveness as a means of spreading communist influence and control in a period which has seen a continuous struggle between East and West and between communism and democracy."
