Synopsis: From the PREFACE: It's safe to say that most people as well as most things made today are in some way effected by computers. Of course, the effect that computers have on each of us differs depending on the type of work that is performed.
In the sixties, computers were too limited in their capabilities and too high in their cost to affect the majority of the people in the world. However, as technology increased near the end of the sixties, it became apparent that computers were here to stay and not just a fad.
In the early to mid seventies when digital integration was improved, the capabilities of computers increased, and their cost decreased. This allowed more companies and other users to design computer-based products. By the end of the seventies, computers and computer controlled products were being introduced everywhere. The reason for this rapid development is that the computer industry has dramatically increased the efficiency and capabilities of their products while lowering the cost.
In the eighties and into the future, the computer will help make all types of work more efficient. In business, computers are and will continue to increase productivity, while keeping cost down. In the manufacturing area, robots and computer control machinery will release people from performing repetitive and tedious jobs. This will allow them to perform more challenging duties.
Probably the most significant increase in the use of computers is in the medical and communication fields. In medicine, computers are allowing paralyzed people to walk, and they are controlling other types of support devices that improve the quality of life for many people. As computer technology increases, the communication industry will increase dramatically allowing more information to be available to more people at a lower cost.
