In the first place, the work lying behind the selecting of the material in this book and its companion volumes is probably more through and more inclusive than has been attempted heretofore. A staff of eight skilled persons spent more than two years reading and evaluating the biography available in English which has been written since the time of Plutarch. More than five thousand volumes were examined and most of them carefully analyzed. Selections and cuttings from the best of these have furnished the material for the Living through Biography series.
