Synopsis: From the Introduction: For many years, computer scientists have been pursuing a line of research that has appeared arcane to some, frightening to others, and incomprehensible to many more: they have been involved in the pursuit of artificial intelligence. Now, at last, the everyday person is beginning to see the first practical outgrowths of this research.
The business world-the primary recipient of these applications-has yet to develop a consensus of opinion about this new technology. Some quarters detect the first signs of major change in the ways that computers will, and can, be used, and are rushing quickly towards the new products and techniques. More cautious groups, perhaps equally aware of the scope of the changes soon to be forthcoming, are patiently waiting, allowing others to take the associated risks. Most, though, feel the vague uncertainty that comes from knowing that something important is taking place, but not knowing how to proceed or even what direction to go in.
It is for the open-minded but as yet uninformed business person that this book is intended: it is a guide to the world of artificial intelligence and its application to the real world of business; it shows the simplicity behind many of the mysteries and the depths to be plumbed beneath some of the most innocent-appearing problems.
The book takes a three-pronged approach, beginning with theoretical issues, moving from there into some of the "nuts and bolts" of AI, and finally going into the world of present-day applications.
The theoretical section begins with an introduction to artificial intelligence from a generalist's point of view, starting with the underpinnings of artificial intelligence. This section includes a historical overview (Chapter 1), some theoretic structures (Chapter 2), and a study of the methods of knowledge representation (Chapter 3).
The "hard core" issues of logical approaches to AI are addressed next. This section looks at the methods of graph search (Chapter 4), the various programming languages for artificial intelligence (Chapter 5), problem- solving techniques (Chapter 6), and pattern recognition techniques (Chapter 7).
Finally, the world of expert systems is examined, from a broad perspective at first (Chapter 8) and then through the examination of some current applications (Chapter 9).
Throughout this book, programming examples and real-world applications are presented to give a solid grounding in what is possible to accomplish and what is unlikely. Moreover, after completing this text, you should be able to judge on a more objective basis the claims being made for-and against-the introduction of artificial intelligence techniques into the business world.
