It has banana-like foliage but is a much larger plant than Bird of Paradise forming huge clumps of stems to 10m in comparison to Strelitzia reginae's 1 to 1.5m. It has striking and singular blooms - the 1 to 1.5 metre leaves are greyish green and arranged in fans atop the trunks. Plants form clumps of several variably-sized trunks that may grow to 50cm in width under optimal conditions. It has striking and singular blooms composed of a dark blue bract, white sepals and bluish-purple "tongue".
