Dark opal basil has serise pink flowers, held atop stalks and set atop glossy, deep purple leaves. This variety often has 10-20% green leaves, dotted with purple. When combined with the green and metallic shades of the leaf color, the result is a garden plant that is both striking and useful. This basil variety grows to about 45 cm high and 25 cm wide, depending on conditions.
It grows more slowly to flower than other basil varieties. The 5cm leaves hold up well, providing a longer season. As with all basils, pinching off the leaves promotes denser growth and pinching off the flower heads also helps to extend the harvest period. You may notice that the leaves at the top of each branch or stem are deep purple, with a slow motion to light green leaves at the base of the plant.
