Sunflowers were first cultivated in North and Central America where they naturally grow as a highly branched annual herb. Plant breeding has created sunflower varieties with one large head on a central stem with a greater number of seeds. Sunflowers get their name from both their appearance and the tendency of the flowers and young buds to trace and face the sun as it passes through the sky. The older flowers are actually fixed and don't track the sun, contrary to popular belief. Sunbird is an open-pollinated heirloom sunflower variety that grows to around 2m tall. This has been a favorite variety of Australian gardeners for years.
