Originally from Mexico, Opuntia Ficus Indica has naturalized in other continents, notably the Mediterranean basin and in South Africa and North Africa. This species producing the edible fruit called prickly pear.
It is an arborescent plant that can reach 3 to 5 meters in height. Its organization into cladodes, commonly called “rackets”, is particular. Cladodes are modified stems of flattened shape, 30 to 40 cm long by 15 to 25 cm wide and 1.5 to 3 cm thick. United to each other, they tend to form branches. Those at the base lignify to form beyond the fourth year of growth a true trunk.
The fruit, or prickly pear, is a fleshy, unilocular, many-seeded (polyspermic) berry that can weigh from 150 to 400 g.
