Hibiscus syriacus is a species of shrub of the genus HIBISCUS of the Malvaceae family, native to the temperate regions of the Far East, very widely cultivated as an ornamental plant in gardens. It arrived in Europe via Syria in the 16th century
It is also called garden hibiscus, althea, tree marshmallow, tree mallow and Syrian hibiscus (Rose of Sharon in English).
The deciduous leaves are alternate, simple, oval or lanceolate, with a toothed or wavy edge.
The flowers of this variety are double and of an astonishing magenta red color (Hibiscus syriacus LUCY)
In its natural state, Hibiscus syriacus forms a large bush of more than 2 meters very thick and very branched with upright stems but by pruning it each year (at the end of winter), one can also make a pretty small flowering tree on stem or half-stem. It can be grown in a pot or in the ground. It tolerates drought well.
