The butterfly vine or deer vine (Hiptage benghalensis) is a woody vine, with opposite leaves, from sub-tropical to tropical regions, native to India, Southeast Asia and the Philippines
Due to the beautiful unique shape of its flowers it is grown as an exotic ornamental plant. The name, Hiptage, is derived from the Greek "hiptamai" meaning "on the fly" and refers to its three-winged fruit known as samara. The butterfly vine is voluble, it can reach 15 meters in height, it rolls up on its support
The evergreen, opposite leaves are carried by a petiole 0.8 to 3 cm long. The adult leaves have an elliptical blade 7.5 to 14 cm long and 5 to 8.5 cm wide. They are slightly grooved on the upper side. Marginal glands are visible on the underside of the leaf, about 8 glands on each side. The juvenile leaves have a beautiful red color.
The inflorescences are 8-15 cm long. The fragrant flowers are in clusters. The pedicel that carries the flower is about 15 mm long, it has a bract at the base and another halfway up. The sepals are covered with hairs, the petals are pinkish white with a yellow throat and very finely cut edges.
The fruits are samaras composed of three wings of unequal size, the largest wing about 4.5 to 5 cm long. The winged fruits are dispersed in nature by the wind.
