The slender flower stalk with numerous blooms of bright blue-purple, or pale blue, or blue and white flowers, each borne on a delicate amethyst blue stem, giving the overall effect of a misty blue plume. The flower stalks are produced just before or with the new leaves in spring and are usually about 1 m tall. The flowers have a honey scent towards evening and are visited by bees during the day
