In 1921, Gabrielle Chanel tasked Ernest Beaux with crafting "a woman's perfume with a woman's scent," something rare and potent. Beaux presented her with a groundbreaking concoction heavily employing aldehydes. Mademoiselle chose the fifth sample, simply naming it N°5. She embraced a revolutionary bottle design adorned with a white label and a faceted cabochon. In 1986, Jacques Polge, the CHANEL nose since 1978, revisited Beaux's creation to craft a fuller iteration: the eau de parfum.
