Synopsis: From the Introduction: As the crow flies, less than 300 miles separate the Yorkshire village of Cawthorne-where Thomas Witlam Atkinson was born on March 6, 1799-from Lower Walmer in Kent, where he died on August 13, 1861. But the road from his birthplace to his burial ground was a long one. It led Atkinson to regions never before visited by a Westerner. He traveled nearly 40,000 miles through Russia-from Saint Petersburg to eastern Mongolia and, fortunately, left an account, here reprinted, of his remarkable peregrinations.
Atkinson was a self-taught architect. He began his career as a stone-carver, working on the neo-Gothic Churches so popular in Victorian England. In 1842, Atkinson went to Germany where, under unknown circumstances, he took an interest in Russia. Said to have a "manner singularly gentle, and an air which mingled entreaty with command," he was able to secure the good will of powerful protectors. Although a plebeian by birth, and not particularly cultured, Atkinson was a reasonably skillful painter. He chose to use this talent to secure the political protection indispensable for the type of journey to Russia he wished to undertake. [...]
"The author traveled nearly forty thousand miles, nearly a third of which he did on horseback. Atkinson provides a vivid account of adventures and misadventures in a frozen and often barren landscape, including numerous close brushes with death from both natural and unnatural causes. He goes into great detail about the populated regions of Siberia, most never visited by Westerners, including the customs and life of its people."
