Synopsis: From the jacket panels: "A first-rate primer," says Robert Moses.
At last, here is a book which vigorously outlines the legal restrictions that can be used to curb the environmentally destructive aspects of technological growth. It opens new vistas for the humanistic concerns of law in medicine, computers, communications, outer space, the ocean, ecology, and even the control of weather ("Who owns the clouds?"). It forces one to go beyond the provincialism of thinking of law in fixed terms, and sees law instead as being adaptable to all areas of the physical and biological sciences. More than this, it raises the important issues of what is really happening with technological advances: Why are the legal aspects considered only after the damaging effects have occurred? What about individual rights in limiting the powers of technology?
The Taming of Technology compels the conclusions that technology must be brought under legal control if it is not to become exploitation rather than progress, and that man, along with his intellectual concern for advancement, must know as well when it is time to stop.
