Synopsis: This deceptively simple composition represents a complex meditation on the Holy Familyβs role in the redemption of humanity. At the center, Mary presents the Christ child to the world. At the left, Saint Elizabeth leans forward to foretell his eventual death, while her son, Saint John the Baptist, offers Jesus an apple, signifying humanityβs fall from grace in the Garden of Eden. At the right, Saint Joseph holds a compass, a sign of his occupation as a carpenter and also symbolic of God the Father. Poussin developed his composition meticulously and deliberately, using clear primary colors, simple forms, and a geometric organization to express the central importance of the Holy Family in Christian belief.
Howard Hibbard's essay places this painting at the heart of the concerns of this painter-philosopher on the border between Christianity and Stoicism.
The American art historian Howard Hibbard (1928β1984) was a leading specialist in 17th- century Italian Baroque art ; his essays included The Architecture of the Palazzo Borghese (1962), Bernini (1965), Bernini e il barocco (1968- and Carlo Moderno and Roman Architecture 1580-1630 (1971). With 56 black and white illustrations in the text and a fold-out color plate at the end.
