Title: A Short History of Financial Euphoria: Financial Genius is Before the Fall
Author: John Kenneth Galbraith
Format: Hardcover
Publisher: Whittle Direct Books 1990
ISBN 10: 096247455X
Size: 7.25 X 10 * 85 pages
Synopsis: From the jacket: Can the lessons of history help us to avoid financial calamity? How can the investor be saved from the consequences of financial euphoria, from flights of mass insanity? Neither financial regulation nor the tenets of conventional economic wisdom can protect us from the disastrous results of euphoria, writes John Kenneth Galbraith. Instead, he says, salvation can come only from a clear understanding of "the mass psychology of the speculative mood."
With insight and wit, Galbraith reviews the common features of the great speculative episodes of the last three centuries-the 17th century tulip mania in Western Europe; the seeming wonder of the joint-stock company, now called the corporation; and, more recently, the rediscovery of leverage in the form of junk bonds. Galbraith finds that the most commonplace feature of these episodes, and many in between, is a naive belief on the part of the investing public that large sums of money are necessarily associated with persons of great intellect and financial acumen. He cautions that this association of money and intelligence is specious.
Galbraith calls this book "a hymn of caution" for good reason. He warns that the time will come when the public hails yet another financial wizard. The reader will then do well to remember the Galbraithian rule: "Financial genius is before the fall." The appearance of the next John Law, Bernie Cornfeld, or Michael Milken may well be, after all, a harbinger of disaster.
John Kenneth Galbraith is the Paul M. Warburg Professor of Economics Emeritus at Harvard University and was the U.S. am- bassador to India during the Kennedy administration. His works The Great Crash 1929, The Affluent Society, The New Industrial State, and Economics and the Public Purpose are landmarks of political and economic analysis.
