"It seems he is mine no longer,' Maire said. "He slept on the faerie mound to hear the music of the SÃdhe. Since then he has changed, and in no way can I heal him."
"He played for Conn, King of the Cruithni," said the trout, "but now he plays for the ruler of the SÃdhe, while another wears his shape. The Queen of the SÃdhe is very beautiful; perhaps your man has forgotten you."
"Four years we had together, tears and laughter. For beauty alone he would not be forgetting me." Maire grew angry. "I will go after him."
When Tadhg would not leave the lovely crystal world of the SÃdhe, beneath Lough Neagh, Maire the Healer resigned herself to stay there, at least in sight of Tadhg, though giving herself as mistress to the King. Yet this separation is nothing to compare with the separation Tadhg and Maire endure when, 1,400 years later, the weakened Sidhe give them freedom....
Independently each thinking the other dead-Tadhg and Maire emerge into the turmoil of modern Northern Ireland. Although they now have the faerie gifts of invisibility and the ability to comprehend modern English, they are not yet free of Brigid's curse. They are compelled to personify the Hunter and the Goddess, ancient Irish deities whose chronic rivalry has lately been intensified by the appearance of a spectral creature with an insatiable blood-lust. Yet to observers, Tadhg is merely another IRA member, and Maire a friend of a Catholic family in Belfast.
Forced to reconcile their pasts with their present, each struggling to reclaim the other, Tadhg and Maire find themselves at last together-doomed to battle each other, possibly to the death. And the outcome of that final conflict will determine the fate of Ireland.
