"THE FIGURE OF a labourer-some furrows in a ploughed field-a bit of sand, sea and sky-are serious subjects, so difficult, but at the same time so beautiful, that it is indeed worth while to devote one's life to the task of expressing the poetry hidden in them," wrote Vincent Van Gogh to his brother.
The task Mahatma Gandhi undertook was to express the poetry hidden in the individual. Under tortured layers of deprivation, servility and fear it was his destiny to unearth the human being and restore to him his human dignity. Freedom for India, all progress, all reform, he believed, began with the individual, who, though physically weak and in desperate want, yet possessed an imperishable soul that could "rise triumphant above every physical weakness and defy the physical combination of a whole world". These were not mere words but a summons that stirred a people out of hopelessness and roused it to belief in itself.
The non-violence which Gandhi advocated as a way out of India's travail was not passive resistance. It was the most fearlessly active force at the disposal of mankind, generated by that greatest of powers, love. The human being, he maintained, cleansed of fear, and thus of hate, whose energies could be turned to non-violent resistance to evil in every sphere of activity -national or international, domestic, political, or social-was the need of the hour, any hour, any era, any country of the world. The individual was the seed of all flowering and fruition. Gandhi lived this belief, and with the consummate skill and devotion of an artist carried it to every corner of this country.
It is fifteen years since independence. Dams have been constructed for irrigation and power, roads have been built, the campaign against want is on and it will succeed, however gradually, as an empty vessel will at last be full, even if it is filled drop by drop. These are the problems that will in the nature of things continue to find a solution, as they will in every country that is progressing from poverty to plenty. But the real raw material, here and in every country of the world, is the human being...
Overall Condition: . Acceptable + It has very minimal wear to the Original decorative paper covered boards w/ yellow cloth spine and no holes or tears. The dust jacket is not included. The binding has minimal wear. The pages are undamaged with no creasing or tearing. There is some light pencil bracketing of text, no highlighting of text, and occasional pencil writing in the margins. There are no missing pages and nothing that would compromise the legibility or understanding of the text; see images.
