The Last Nixon Watch by John Osborne The New Republic Book Co 1975
Title: The Last Nixon Watch
Author: John Osborne;Cartoons by Paul Szep
Format: Hardcover
Publisher: The New Republic Book Co 1975
ISBN 10: 0915220008
Size: 5.75 X 8.5 * 246 pages
Synopsis: From the jacket: With THE LAST NIXON WATCH John Osborne proves once more to be an astute political observer, the rare blend of reporter and pundit acclaimed by liberals and conservatives alike. In his introduction, written especially for this volume, Osborne looks at the effect on the nation of the Nixon administration as a whole, measuring the former Chief Executive's difficulties in 1974 against his failures and achievements since 1968.
Also collected here is the culmination of the work that won for Osborne a George Polk Memorial Award for Outstanding Magazine Reporting in 1974. Set into perspective-in his characteristically wry yet judicious style-are all the historic events of the past year: Nixon's repeatedly expressed determination to stay in office early in the year, the revelations of the 182-minute tape gap, the indictments of seven close Nixon associates and assistants, Nixon's trips to the Mideast and the Soviet Union, his recurrent attacks of phlebitis, the demands for tapes and documents by the House Judiciary Committee and Special Prosecutor Leon Jaworski, the overwhelmingly harmful revelations in August of the tapes of June 23, 1972, and, finally, resignation and pardon.
Week by week Osborne's political prescience is borne out by his early discussions of Nixon's tax problems and his reports of Vice President Gerald Ford's preliminary staff- gathering. Also revealing are the portraits of those around Nixon as his administration sped to its end- of Henry Kissinger, furious in Salzburg over allegations of wire- tap authorizations, and of General Alexander Haig, taking firm hold as White House staff chief.
The unmistakable combination of candor and compassion that has marked John Osborne's writing through more than five years as a Nixon watcher characterizes this final volume as well. His comments on Nixon's resignation sum it all up: "Thank God he's gone. I'll miss him and I wish for him the mercy that he doesn't deserve and probably won't get."
Overall Condition: Very good: The book does not look new and has been read but is in excellent condition. There is no obvious damage to the cover the dust jacket (with minor wear and tear) is included. There are no missing or damaged pages, no creases or tears, and no underlining/highlighting of text or writing in the margins.
