Synopsis: From the Jacket: In 1927, the Nationalists and Communists of China parted political company in the Yangtze Valley, and for the ensuing decade the outlawed Communists were known to most of the outside world by the Nationalists' customary designation-"Red bandits." As such, they were the object of the National Government's various "bandit-suppression campaigns,' which ended only when the government and its challengers in 1937 entered upon a new coalition to confront the Japanese aggression. During the 1927-37 period especially, the Communist movement in China received little sustained study, even by U.S. governmental services. O. Edmund Clubb was one American official who during that period supplied the U.S. Department of State with information regarding the Chinese Communists and with analyses of the Communist activities.

The present work comprises a confidential voluntary report submitted on April 30, 1932 by the author, who was then a vice consul in the U.S. Consulate General at Hankow. Based upon a variety of sources, including Russian materials and missionary reports as well as both Chinese and Western publications, the report deals with Communism in China as essentially an indigenous armed rebellion. It covers the initial period of Communist reorientation after the bloody Kuomintang- Communist break of 1927, and the three Nationalist "bandit-suppression campaigns" of 1930-32. It also treats the organization and activities of the Chinese Communist Party and the Chinese Soviets, and offers in conclusion an analytical estimate of the significance of the revolutionary movement in China.

O. Edmund Clubb served in China as an American Foreign Service Officer (with breaks for assignments in IndoChina and the Soviet Far East) from 1929 to 1950. After observing the beginnings of the Communist armed rebellion from the vantage point of Hankow, he was in Peking, as American Consul General, when it was captured by the Communist People's Liberation Army in January 1949. He is at present Senior Research Associate in the East Asian Institute of Columbia University. He is the author of many articles on Asian affairs, and of the book Twentieth Century China-also published by Columbia.
