Garden design by Sylvia Crowe Hearthside Press 1959 American Edition
Title: Garden design
Author: Sylvia Crowe
Format: Hardcover
Publisher: Hearthside Press 1959
Edition: American Edition
Size: 6.5 X 9.5 * 229 pages
Synopsis: From the Jacket: 'Gardens are the link between men and the world in which they live', writes the author of this book. 'Men in every age have felt the need to reconcile themselves with their surroundings, and have created gardens to satisfy their ideals and aspirations'.
Sylvia Crowe, who is a distinguished landscape architect, divides her book into four parts-the history of gardens, the principles of garden design, the materials of design and, finally, the creating of specialised gardens. She traces the evolution and development of the garden from the oasis gardens of Egypt, through the old Spanish gardens (with their 'gloriettas' or little private paradises) which linked East and West, through the Italian, French and English gardens, with their varied traditions and qualities, to the contemporary gardens of Europe and America.
This historical survey leads naturally up to the practical sections of the book in which Sylvia Crowe, from her wide experience, shows the reader exactly what goes into the creation of a garden, both the fundamental principles of design and the correct application of those principles to achieve the desired effect. Among the points considered are the actual shape of the available ground, plant material (this is a long and important chapter), the intelligent use of water, sculpture and stone-work, the problems of garden boundaries and ground pattern. In the final part of the book Miss Crowe deals with the making of specialised gardens, including those for public parks, blocks of flats, factories and schools.
The many photographs and diagrams help to bring out the points that Miss Crowe makes in her text and included among them are illustrations of examples of the work of leading modern landscape architects in various parts of the world.
GARDEN DESIGN is on the approved reading list of the Landscape Design School of the National Council of State Garden Clubs.
