Synopsis: From the Jacket: South Africa, as a nation and as a society, is like an active volcano-never completely dormant, it has become particularly volatile in the last few years. And since the Botha government's imposition of a "state of emergency" in 1985, we have witnessed a full-scale eruption. Few would deny that South Africa is on the brink of radical transformation, and that apartheid must go. But how long must the transition period last and what should be the political, economic, and social structure of a postapartheid South Africa?

In this immensely relevant and hard-hitting book, experts from South Africa, the United States, and Europe-to- gether representing every perspective involved in the issue-offer genuinely new approaches in exploring the prospect of a peaceful elimination of apartheid and the formation of a society in which all South Africans, regardless of their race, color, sex, or national origin, exercise their legitimate share of political and economic power.

Under S. Prakash Sethi's skillful editorship. The South African Quagmire begins with his incisive introduction, "South Africa Beyond Apartheid," followed by nine wide-ranging political perspectives. Part II is an overview of the legal and religious roots of the apartheid state, and Part III offers a probing look at the debate over economic sanctions. After devoting substantial chapters to the social perspective inside South Africa and U.S. and European pressures for sanctions, the book concludes with in-depth discussions of the role of the South African and U.S. business communities.

The South African Quagmire presents the complete spectrum of opinion on South Africa, reflecting the urgency of the issues themselves. The distinguished writers come from business, politics, academia, religion, and black leadership in South Africa, the United States, and other parts of the world. Brought together in this landmark volume, their various and provocative insights create an invaluable, dramatic dialogue on the South African problem and help to direct the debate toward constructive and peaceful solutions.

S. Prakash Sethi contributes to many of the major journals in the fields of management, international business, strategic planning, and public affairs and public policy. At The City University of New York, he is a professor at Baruch College and associate director of its Center of Management. He serves as a consultant to several major U.S. and international corporations. He also serves as a consultant to various government agencies, congressional committees, and public interest groups in the United States and abroad.
