Synopsis: From the Jacket: A guide for strategists, planners, politicians, citizens, activists, managers, entrepreneurs, investors, students, and communicators on how to write scenarios to make better decisions for their future.
How can you begin to chart the course of your own future or your company's, not as a mechanical exercise, but using the same intuitive skills that a painter, novelist, or musician brings to the creation of a work of art? Peter Schwartz shows how, by using the "scenaric" approach he has pioneered in working with the world's top firms and with individuals.
What increasingly affects all of us, whether professional planners or individuals preparing for a better future for ourselves, is not the tangibles of life- bottom-line numbers, for instance- but the intangibles: our hopes and fears, our beliefs and dreams. Only stories-scenarios-and our ability to visualize different kinds of futures adequately capture these intangibles.
In The Art of the Long View, Peter Schwartz describes for the first time in book form the new techniques, originally developed within Royal Dutch/ Shell, for building scenarios. These have become increasingly powerful tools for developing strategic vision within businesses and helping individuals select their own paths into the future.
The book is based on numerous firsthand scenario exercises carried out by Schwartz with many of the world's leading institutions and companies, including the White House, EPA, BellSouth, PG&E, Inland Steel, Volvo, Nissan, and the International Stock Exchange, as well as in several personal ventures of his own.
PETER SCHWARTZ is one of the world's leading futurists. He is president of Global Business Network, an international think tank and consulting firm in Emeryville, California, that includes many of the world's leading-edge thinkers about the future, as well as innovative scientists, artists, and business executives.
