Synopsis: From the Foreward: This manual is not intended as a general textbook on photography. There are so many of these already that there would be little justification for the writing of another unless it had a distinctly different purpose in view. Believing that the well-rounded growth of the student is best secured through self-directed activity, we have purposely refrained from the manner of organization and treatment common to the average textbook and have endeavored to develop instead an arrangement whereby the book serves not so much as a textbook from which certain facts and ideas are obtained as a guide to give direction to the activities of the student. It is through these activities that the enlargement of the skills of the student and his development are promoted.
This work is intended for both curricular and extracurricular purposes, although for the present it is believed that it will find its greatest sphere of usefulness in the latter field. However, regardless of its classification, the pedagogical basis adopted is equally sound and thoroughly in line with modern thought on the learning process.
Since interest in photography and picture making appears early and long before a curiosity in regard to the how and why of photography develops, and since this latter phase can be introduced profitably only to students with some knowledge of chemistry and physics, this work has been written so as to be suitable for students without a prior knowledge of physics and chemistry. It is suitable, therefore, for the junior as well as the senior high school, although for the latter it may be usefully supplemented with a work on the theory of photographic processes and their basis in chemistry and physics.
While designed primarily for schools and clubs, the text should prove suitable also for individual self-instruction. If the use of the hand camera is introduced at the beginning, Chapter VIII, "Picture Taking with Hand Cameras," may be substituted for Chapter I, and those portions of Chapter II which relate specifically to the use of the pinhole camera may be omitted.
The authors desire to acknowledge the courtesy of the Eastman Kodak Company in permitting the use of several illustrations from The Fundamentals of Photography by Dr. C. E. K. Mees and The Photography of Colored Objects, and the comments and suggestions by Mark Ellingson of the faculty of the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute.
The training program developed in this manual has been thoroughly tested over a number of years and found effective. However, the conditions under which activities of this nature are conducted vary so widely in different schools that it is altogether possible that certain modifications would render the manual more useful to a larger number of schools. The writers will be glad to receive suggestions for its improvement from those interested in photography as a means of developing the individual.

Overall Condition: Acceptable: The book has obvious wear. It has some wear to the cover, but its integrity is intact. There is minimal writing in the margins or underlining and highlighting of text, and there are no missing pages or anything that would compromise the legibility or understanding of the text.
