Synopsis: From the Cover: MASS MEDIA & SOCIETY treats the media industries as complex organizations with their own inner dynamics and interests, and outlines the organization and strengths of the public agencies that regulate them. The function and effects of advertising-a key media support system-are covered, followed by a section on the basic psychology of audience behavior. It deals with contemporary disputes in which the mass media are involved--their role in shaping modern mass society (including McLuhan's message) and their effects on politics. Each section is prefaced by an extensive interpretative essay ranging beyond the content of the selections. These are intended to assist the student in putting current controversies in theoretical perspective and make the volume a more useful course text.
ALAN WELLS is a Professor of Sociology at Tulane University. His graduate work in this subject was done at Washington
University in St. Louis, from which he earned the Ph.D. degree in 1970. He is the author
of one previous book, The Global Metropolis, and numerous papers and journal articles.
Overall Condition: No obvious damage to the cover. No missing or damaged pages, no creases or tears, and no underlining/highlighting of text or writing in the margins. May be very minimal identifying marks on the inside cover. Very minimal wear and tear.
