Title: An Inch of Snow

Author: William E. Cobb

Publisher: John F. Blair 1964

LCCN: 64-14723

Size: 6 X 8.5 * 307 pages

Synopsis: From the Jacket: Yankees are no good in general. One by the name of Horatio Bunker is no good in particular. There is nothing narrow-minded about me, but experience has taught me that Yankees, Republicans, and foreigners are not to be trusted.

I've spent a lifetime working for the Democratic Party in Jeffersonville, in Tarvania, and now this upstart who'd undermined our economic balance decided to shake up the political situation by opposing the venerable Judge Ponticorn - and on for the seat in the general assembly the Republican ticket!

When he tricked me into running his campaign headquarters, we Democrats thought we had found a way to put a final end to Republicanism in Tarvania. However, it didn't work out that way.

Horatio Bunker doffed his tailor-made clothes in favor of Cohen's ready-to-wear. His Bentley disappeared and a souped-up '48 Ford took its place. He joined the Presbyterian Church, went coon hunting, sampled the local moonshine, and learned in a very short time what a great many politicians never learn that under no conditions does a successful campaigner oppose God, the Flag of the United States of America, or Motherhood.

Since 1900 the complete victory of the Democratic Party in Tarvania had been assured. No serious challenge had ever been made to its authority. Something was wrong in the year 1960. Republicans all over Tarvania came to life. Most of the counties of the state had acquired new leadership and had competent men in control.

The worst part about this transformation of the character of the Republican Party was that its new leaders were more concerned with good government than with acquiring jobs for themselves and their supporters. They sure made good use of our record in the Democratic Party to turn the 1960 campaign into a real dogfight.
Jeffersonville, Tarvania.
BILL ANCHOR

Bill Cobb, energetic young businessman from Morganton, is one of the new Republican leaders responsible for the changing political climate in the South and is considered an "elder Statesman" by members of his party in North Carolina. Defeated in his first try for public office in 1948 (he says he and Tom Dewey went down together), he has since served as minority leader in the State Senate, as State Republican Party Chairman, and as a participant in national conventions.

Mr. Cobb is a native New Yorker, attended New England preparatory schools, and graduated from Yale University after serving two years as a pilot in World War II. Since then he has lived in Morganton, where he is engaged in the hardwood lumber business.

An Inch of Snow is drawn from the author's experiences in politics in North Carolina and elsewhere and was written at odd moments after the 1960 campaign.
