Synopsis: From the Jacket: Woodcut is the oldest of the printmaking processes, developed from the simple decorative block-printing of prehistoric times. With its related techniques, it is also one of the most widely practiced. The emphasis throughout this manual is on simple methods and inexpensive equipment, avoiding complexity for its own sake but providing the student with all the basic knowledge from which to develop his or her own style. After a historical survey covering early masters such as DĆ¼rer and Holbein, the ukiyo-e color print in Japan, and developments of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries in Europe and America, Walter Chamberlain leads the student through every stage from the purchase of the woodblock to the numbering of the edition. He discusses the characteristics of various relief printing surfaces not just the many different hardwoods, softwoods, and plywoods, but also such established alternatives as plastics, metal, collage surfaces, and found objects and the cutting tools, inks, and rollers appropriate to each type of surface. There are sections on hand- and machine-made papers, and on printing by hand or with a press, in monochrome and in color.

Overall Condition: Ex Library with the usual extras. The book has been read but is in good condition. The dust jacket in a protective plastic sleeve is taped to the cover. The binding has minimal wear. The pages are undamaged with no creasing or tearing, no pencil underlining of text, no highlighting of text, and no writing in the margins. There are no missing pages; see images.
