The Great American Stomach Book by Maureen Mylander Ticknor & Fields,1982
Title: The Great American Stomach Book
Author: Maureen Mylander
Format: Hardcover
Publisher: Ticknor & Fields, 1982
ISBN 10: 0899191088
Size: 5.75 X 8.5 X 1.25 * 269 pages
Synopsis: From the Jacket: Indigestion, flatulence, diarrhea, constipation, ulcers, hemorrhoids-they're common problems but not easy to discuss, even with a doctor. In fact, twenty million Americans suffer constantly from severe digestive diseases, and fourteen million more suffer occasionally; but we continue to view the digestive tract and its function through veils of ignorance, embarrassment, taboo, and inappropriate humor.
The Great American Stomach Book aims to tackle that taboo and to dispel the ignorance. How long does it take to digest a meal? What is regularity? How does stress affect digestion? Why is it important to know the fiber content of the foods we eat? What are those gurgles?
Maureen Mylander follows the whole process of digestion from top to bottom, explaining what's normal, which in itself will be reassurance for many readers; what can go wrong; and what we can do when something does go wrong. The book is full of fascinating facts and stories and appropriate humor. A special section at the end, "Trouble-Shooter's Guide," is arranged alphabetically by type of problem, for quick reference.
You don't need a strong stomach to read this book, and you may have a better one when you've finished it.
MAUREEN MYLANDER is the author of Salesman Surgeon and was the ghost writer of several hundred of Michael Halberstam's medical columns.
HOWARD SPIRO, who contributes a foreword to this book, is a well-known gastroenterologist. He is Professor of Internal Medicine at Yale University.
