Long ago, the ancient Greeks were fascinated by the idea, and knowledge of the optical principles of the camera obscura-the toy box with a pinhole--can be traced to the writings of Aristotle.
But the camera obscura-though it became the direct predecessor of the photographic camera-could not, by iself, make real the ancient dream. Not until photochemistry was developed in the early part of the 18th century did the true history of photography begin.
Thorough and scholarly, written in a lively prose, beautifully illustrated, A Concise History of Photography by Helmut and Alison Gernsheim traces the evolution of this modern, technological miracle from the first, vague concepts that appeared in history, through every important development in equipment and technique, to the invention of color photography. Throughout the volume, and particularly in the second half, there is an emphasis on the artistic achievements of photography and an appreciation of its broad scope, ranging from social documentation to the most intimate portraits and genre pictures.
A Concise History of Photography is illustrated with a selection of magnificent photographs, examples of the art in all its stages. Represented are the early daguerrotypists; Nicephore, the world's first successful photographer; Carlton E. Watkins, pioneer San Francisco photographer, who astounded the Paris International Exhibit of 1867 with his breath taking views of Yosemite Valley; and such contemporaries as Capa, Cartier-Bresson, Cecil Beaton, and many others.

Overall Condition: Good + The book has been read but is in good condition. It has no issues to the cover, including scuff marks, holes or tears. The dust jacket with legible panels is very presentable on the front but has some bad tears on the back and is included. The binding has minimal wear. The pages are undamaged with no creasing or tearing, no pencil underlining of text, no highlighting of text, and no writing in the margins. There are no missing pages; see images.
