Synopsis: From the Foreword: Joe's grandfather, Joe Ars, was a pharmacist around the turn of the century. Herbs were the tools of his trade. He used his mortar and pestle and his knowledge of plants to create herbal combinations to heal a variety of ailments. Aspirin had just been invented, and most of the medicines we take for granted today were unknown. When Joe G. went to graduate school in pharmacology at the University of Michigan seventy years later, he was taught that botanical medicines were a thing of the past, a quaint relic of a bygone era. The pharmacognosists (medicinal plant experts) were perceived by the pharmacologists as irrelevant dinosaurs.
In Mexico, where Joe taught pharmacology to medical students and where Terry did her doctoral research in medical anthropology, people used plants for healing. She took a strong interest in their medical traditions. The herbalists and curanderos of Oaxaca had a wealth of knowledge about the botanical medicines around them. We have learned that the gulf separating herbs from manufactured drugs is not wide. People metabolize medicines using the same enzymes that humans have evolved over thousands of years of adaptation to the plants in their environment.
In the first edition of The People's Pharmacy (1976), one of the most popular sections was on home remedies. We heard from a lot of people about their favorites and continued to write about self-care approaches in subsequent editions and in our syndicated newspaper column. This book is a direct outgrowth of the many home remedies people have shared with us over the years and the intense interest in herbal medicines that has developed in this country over the last two decades. It is a return to our roots-for Joe, to the herbal pharmacy of his grandfather, and for Terry, to the healing traditions of people around the world.
