Synopsis: Preface to the Sixth Edition: So great and varied have been the advances in pharmacology and therapeutics that textbooks have had great difficulty to keep pace with them. It is necessary to make a careful appraisal of these new remedies and determine which of them have stood the test of time. The present edition of Pharmacology and Therapeutics attempts to do this.
Throughout the book, as in previous editions, emphasis is placed on the official drugs and preparations. The author had the privilege of being a delegate to the United States Pharmacopeial Convention of 1950, representing the Medical Society of the State of New York. In the selection of drugs, close adherence to United States Pharmacopeia XIV and National Formulary IX was observed. For nonofficial drugs, New and Nonofficial Remedies of the Council on Pharmacy and Chemistry of the American Medical Association was followed.
Prominent place has been given to the valuable and useful new drugs that have met wide acceptance. Some of the older drugs which have fallen into dis-repute, and properly so, have been deleted. The entire section on antiseptics and disinfectants has been rewritten and brought up to date. Illustrations have been added to give as many visual aids as possible to an understanding of the text. The subject of therapeutics has been expanded considerably, and the administration of drugs emphasized still further.
Anti-infectives are described fully yet succinctly, and a chart indicating the choice of drug in the various infections helps in the prompt selection of the proper drug. Hormones are presented with discrimination, and due importance is attached to some of them like adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and cortisone. The section on vitamins has been gone over critically to include all those that are regarded as being clinically useful.
Because of its extreme importance, drug addiction is discussed fully along the lines of current medical thought on the subject. Among the topics covered are the types of individuals prone to develop addiction, the withdrawal syndrome and the present-day therapy or "cure."
Our knowledge of enzyme systems has been growing steadily. Enzymes undoubtedly will play an important role in the therapy of disease. A chapter devoted to our understanding of enzymes has been added. Similarly, isotopes, together with nitrogen mustard and urethan, have been included. Also, the newer autonomic ganglia-blocking agents are described.
The index of Symptoms and Diseases has been expanded extensively to include all the recently introduced remedies. An entirely new feature is the listing of drugs alphabetically with their dosage for ready reference. The General Index has been made as comprehensive as possible; subjects have been indexed and cross-indexed in great detail.
At the end of most chapters, questions of the situational type are to be found. These can be of inestimable help to the student in organizing her knowledge along clinical lines. These questions have been prepared by Miss Elizabeth Gill, who has collaborated with the author in the preparation of this edition. She has also reviewed the text critically and has made many constructive recommendations.
The new format of the book with the type page arranged in two columns of legible type is designed for easy reading. The typographic style of the headings has been simplified to emphasize the logical classification and arrangement of the topics. Members of the staff of J. B. Lippincott Company have been especially helpful in this phase of the revision, but their suggestions have not been limited to typographic improvements. The author appreciates the contributions which they have made, and is indebted to Mr. Brooks Stewart for his help.
