America the Raped by Gene Marine Simon and Schuster 1969 Book Club Edition <19 K>
Title: America the Raped: The Engineering Mentality and the Devastation of a Continent
Author: Gene Marine
Format: Hardcover
Publisher: Simon and Schuster 1969
Edition: Book Club Edition [19 K]
Size: 5.75 X 8.5 * 376 pages
Synopsis: From the Jacket: This slashing broadside is aimed at halting the witless, overwhelming tide of human energy that threatens to spoil beyond repair some of nature's most splendid achievements-the waters, wildlife and vegetation of the American continent. Here is a sharp outcry that commands every thoughtful American to reflect on the price we pay for the technological blitzkrieg that we confuse with Progress. Such glories as the Florida Everglades, the lower gorges of the Grand Canyon, the Great Smokies and the Great Swamp of New Jersey, places that we need not only to refresh the human soul but to serve as well as irreplaceable storehouses of nature, may soon be forever scarred.
"We need not merely a sense of responsibility toward the land and the rivers and the trees," writes Gene Marine, "but a whole way of thinking constantly in environmental terms ...that embraces cities as well as mountains, hungry and emotionally stunted black children as well as the roseate spoonbill." Marine's main target is the Engineers (with a capital E) and what he calls the "engineering mentality"- ...the simple, supposedly pragmatic approach of taking the problem as given, ignoring or ruthlessly excluding questions of side effects, working out 'solutions' that meet only the simplest definitions of the problem."
America the Raped is neither wide-eyed nor sentimental. It is a hardheaded indictment of a small-minded attitude that, in the name of efficiency, diminishes us all.
Gene Marine, a native San Franciscan, has been a reporter for twenty years. Most of his work has been in magazine journalism and broadcasting; he holds a Sigma Delta Chi award for radio newswriting and was for a decade the West Coast correspondent for The Nation. After working in both Los Angeles and New York, he returned home to work for Ramparts, where he is now a senior editor, and to live in Berkeley, California.
