Synopsis: From the Jacket: A True Story of 1930's Pioneers On New Mexico's Continental Divide
ETTA ROSE at seventeen was pretty enough to expect luxury, romance and an elegant house. What she got was hunger, deprival and a mud hut. She expected admiration and devotion from Aubrey, her handsome husband. What she got was humiliation and neglect, or so it seemed. The wall that separated Aubrey's needs from her own was as dense and opaque as the dirt walls that surrounded her.
Against the reality of her life stood the vision of a symbolic dream house-a house of spotless beauty and perfection. Bewildered by the love and hate she felt for her dominating husband, she had to learn self-reliance while struggling to make a home out of a hovel and a woman out of herself.
This autobiographic novel depicts homesteading on the high flatlands of the New Mexico Rockies. Homesteaders like Etta and Aubrey Lewis often had no other tools than their bare hands and no more materials than a wind-gnarled cedar post, rawhide, and the earth itself.
What could inspire these homesteaders of the Great Depression to claw an existence out of this barren land? Driven by dreams of building prosperous farms and ranches, what they built was character, courage and creativity in its truest sense.
ETTA ROSE KNOX, daughter of a tenant farmer, was born at home in Taylor County, Texas in 1915. The family moved west to Pecos Valley, New Mexico, where she married at the age of seventeen. She spent the next few years homesteading on the western slope of the Continental Divide. From that period she has gathered the material for this novel. Today she lives on a ranch near Stonyford, California.
