A Dictionary of Electronic & Computer Music Technology by Richard Dobson ➤ Oxford Univ Press 1992
A Dictionary of Electronic & Computer Music Technology: Instruments, Terms, Techniques by Richard Dobson Oxford University Press 1992
Title: A Dictionary of Electronic & Computer Music Technology: Instruments, Terms, Techniques
Author: Richard Dobson
Format: Hardcover
Publisher: Oxford University Press, New York 1992
ISBN: 9780193113442
Size: 5.6 X 8.75 * 224 pages
Synopsis: From the Jacket: The rapid pace of technological development in electronic music has led to a plethora of instruments and systems, yet these, and the technology behind them, are often only imperfectly understood. There has been an increasing need for a reference book which surveys the whole field objectively and with insight.
Richard Dobson assumes no prior knowledge on the part of the reader. He introduces and explains the mass of technical information in clear, comprehensive entries dealing with common principles and techniques, such as those on the computer, electronic components, and synthesis. Specific products are then referred to as examples of a particular approach. This not only allows him to show the links between instruments such as the sampler, synthesizer, sequencer, and signal processor, but also ensures that the text will not quickly become out-of-date. The reader can thus use the book both as a reference work and as a tutorial text, moving from basic principles to specific examples.
There are entries on major commercial instruments: much historical information is included in these, and also on those companies and individuals whose work has been central to the development of electronic instruments and their music. The Appendices provide tables on binary and hexadecimal conversion, MIDI commands, and scale and frequency. There are indexes of products and manufacturers, names, and a general index.
Richard Dobson studied flute and composition at the Royal College of Music. He has developed and taught courses on electronic music, and works as a free-lance flute maker and player.
Overall Condition: Very good: The book does not look new and has been read but is in excellent condition. There is no obvious damage to the cover the dust jacket (if applicable) is included for hard covers. There are no missing or damaged pages, no creases or tears, and no underlining/highlighting of text or writing in the margins. It may have very minimal identifying marks on the inside cover as well as very minimal wear and tear; see images.
