When we think of dangerous snakes we usually think of exotic tropical parts of the world - India, Africa, the Brazilian jungle. Surprisingly, Mr. Kauffeld says that there are more dangerous snakes within the United States than in any other part of the world. For instance, only a few miles from New York City, in the New Jersey Pine Barrens and in Dutchess and Westchester counties, there are hundreds of timber rattlesnakes, and copperheads, as well as many harmless snakes.
In the tropics personal collecting of snakes is almost nonexistent. Professional collectors employ museum and zoo natives to gather specimens, but only a permanent resident would have the time and know-how to do the hunting himself. Here in the United States snake collectors are thoroughly acquainted with the domains and habits of snakes and are able to fill the needs of zoos and museums that constantly need specimens.
The author explains that there is some danger in snake hunting but little chance that a snake - harmless or poisonous - will strike; he has only been attacked once and by a harmless blacksnake. Still, as Mr. Kauffeld's adventures prove, in snake hunting the unexpected can always happen.
ABOUT CARL KAUFFELD
The Staten Island Zoo has one of the largest and most varied collections of reptiles in the world, thanks to the efforts of Carl Kauffeld, who has been Curator of Reptiles for over ten years. Before World War II he was an assistant at the American Museum of Natural History. He returned to the museum after his army stint when the war was over, and then accepted the Staten Island post. Highly regarded as a herpetologist, Mr. Kauffeld has written many technical papers as well as articles for popular adventure magazines.
Overall Condition: Very good: The book does not look new and has been read but is in excellent condition. There is no obvious damage to the cover the dust jacket (if applicable) is included for hard covers. There are no missing or damaged pages, no creases or tears, and no underlining/highlighting of text or writing in the margins. It may have very minimal identifying marks on the inside cover as well as very minimal wear and tear; see images.
