Most farmers romanticize about the dignity of child labor on the farm - the satisfying lessons to be learned about work and money - and they deplore government or union interference with their cheap labor source. While taking federal crop subsidies of from $800 to millions, the farmers blast government "handouts" to workers in the form of strong minimum wage and child labor laws, and programs to improve the children's health and education.

Many books have been written about the "migrant farmworker," but few have concentrated on the children of farmworkers. Sweatshops in the Sun is more than an exposé; it is an examination of the social-cultural-educational environment of the sons and daughters of farmworkers. Taylor examines in detail the causes and effects of hunger, malnutrition, and educational deprivation.
In the end he states: "Children should not have to work. They should not be used to depress the labor market, should not be used to take the place of breadwinners. I think it is time the farmer comes out from behind the mythology and admits the need for child labor is rooted in economics. The farm is not a good place for children to work, just as no factory, no mine, no cotton mill is a good place for children to work."
Ronald B. Taylor is an investigative reporter for the Fresno Bee in California and freelance writer for The Nation and other magazines. During the past two decades he has written extensively about the problems of rural America. While he has tended to specialize in the subjects of farm labor and rural poverty, he has written
pieces on farm economic problems for such magazines as Farm Journal and Western Livestock Journal. He is a graduate of Washington State College where he majored in agriculture and journalism.
