Navaho Folk Tales by Franc Johnson Newcomb Museum of Navajo Ceremonial Art 1967
Title: Navaho Folk Tales
Author: Franc Johnson Newcomb
Format: Hardcover
Publisher: Museum of Navajo Ceremonial Art 1967
LCCN: 67-30580
Size: 6.25 X 9.25 * 203 pages
Synopsis: From the Jacket: PERHAPS the most valuable information secured by an anthropologist or other individual seeking cultural data is that which is divulged voluntarily. Questioning frequently indicates a researcher's thinking, or may suggest the type of answer expected.
In collecting Navaho folk tales, Mrs. Newcomb obtained a great amount of unsought material. Had she been directing intentional quiries to the Navaho women who tended the Newcomb children, while carrying on household tasks, it is doubtful if such a store of knowledge could have been assembled as is here presented.
These tales provide fascinating reading for youth and adult alike. They contain all the elements of good mystery, suspense, and intrigue stories, with "Pollyanna" elements injected on occasion. On the other hand, the folk tales subtly reveal many facts regarding environmental features; they bespeak considerable time depth, indicating that certain events transpired long ago, while the Dine'é were migrating from former homesites and inhabiting different areas from those currently occupied, or again that particular happenings took place in much later times. They disclose numerous traits that were adopted from other Indian peoples with whom the Navaho came into contact, especially the pueblo-dwelling Indians. They portray much concerning the Navaho attitude toward all life, and explain many facets otherwise difficult for a non-Navaho to understand.
The goal of the Museum of Navaho Ceremonial Art is to present a well rounded concept of Navaho culture, from early times to the present. The Museum is the permanent depository of a treasure of sandpainting materials: reproductions of hundreds of designs executed by singers, or medicine men, during ceremonial rites held for the benefit of ailing Navaho; recordings of many chants which are an integral part of the curing rites; and valued paraphernalia assembled by several singers no longer living.
With the publishing of NAVAHO FOLK TALES, it is believed that the exhibits and research collections to be seen in the Museum will be made more understandable. The cultural background provided by the tales should explain many otherwise unaccounted for whys and wherefores of Navaho life.
