Synopsis: From the Jacket: Robert Farrar Capon author of BED AND BOARD: PLAIN TALK ABOUT MARRIAGE
is an Episcopal priest, player of music, teacher of Greek, husband, father of six. With gusto and bite he snatches the subject of marriage away from the adjustment engineers, the sex technicians, the whole army of today's statistical de-plendorizers. His concern is not with the abstract, neatly classified couples who inhabit the case histories, but with the concrete, flesh-and-blood, unclassifiable and unreconstructed human being who inhabits the earth. His concern is with the importance of feeling, of caring, of recognizing and relishing the high value of one's role as Man, Woman, Husband, Wife, Father, Mother. His spirited and inspiring book has, even before publication, evoked a burst of enthusiasm.

REINHOLD NIEBUHR writes: "I quite share your enthusiasm for Bed and Board. You say that the author has 'snatched the subject of sex and marriage from the adjustment engineers.' I say he has done better than that. He has snatched the subject from the technocratic sexologist and the sentimental moralist, and he has given us a very wise and occasionally hilarious account of the fun that marriage between two people who love each other involves."

BISHOP JAMES A. PIKE: "In a day when all the talk about marriage is seemingly centered about such terms as eugenics, adjustment, and the like, it is thoroughly refreshing to come across some honest and practical folk wisdom such as that in Robert Farrar Capon's Bed and Board. If loving humor and a sense of awe are necessary ingredients of the married condition, and I think they are, then Bed and Board will be a treat and revelation to everyone who has sought to find those qualities."

An extraordinary vision of the household, alluring and attainable, emerges from Bed and Board. And-what is infinitely refreshing, almost radical in a decade that has focused somewhat querulously on the duties, problems, miseries, and shortcomings of the modern woman as Wife -Father Capon reinstates the importance of the man in maintaining the emotional vitality of a marriage, in setting the tone of family life, in leading, not as a superior being or tyrant, but as the male whose role it is in wedlock as in a waltz to lead.

THE REV. THURSTON N. DAVIS, S. J., Editor in Chief of America: "This is the real thing - well written, wonderfully witty, wise and sane. What a change of pace from the usual jargon!"

DR. GERMAIN GRISEZ, Department of Philosophy, Georgetown University, Washington: "Though Father Capon is a priest of the Episcopal Church, I think his book is eminently Catholic, and I hope that my fellow Roman Catholics will not hesitate to enjoy his wit and profit by his wisdom."

THE REV. DAVID H. C. READ, Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church, New York: "The book swept me along with its immense gusto and refreshingly down-to-earth conviction. I am handing it to an engaged couple with every confidence that they will gain more from it than from the solemn technicians on whom we have had for too long to rely. May it circulate like a gust of fresh air through the dusty corridors of counseling."

Bed and board-love and nourishment-these are the sacraments, the foundations, the compass points of Father Capon's plain talk about marriage. His book is an invitation to seize, enrich, and experience to the fullest the individual moments of which a whole life is made.

BISHOP WALTER C. KLEIN, Diocese of Northern Indiana: "It is a happy combination of orthodoxy, reason, originality, and humor. I hope that it will have the wide circulation it deserves."

ALGERNON D. BLACK, N. Y. Ethical Culture Society: "It is wonderfully written, with humor and vigor and vivacity. It is sensitive and has insight. It is frank and specific. The author is conservative in theology and conservative on pre-marital and extra-marital relationships. But these are all discussed in such a charming way that he is positively insidious. The chapter on the children and the final chapter are something special. I don't see how anybody could resist them."

THE REV. MALCOLM BOYD, Church of the Atonement, Washington, D.C.: "As a contemporary manual about men-husbands-fathers, women-wives-mothers, sexuality, Sex, marriage, families and faithfulness, this book is a brilliant achievement and a clarion call to be human first of all."

But all we have said can give no more than an inkling of the good sense and merriment, the ebullient, scratchy, human voice that sounds through Father Capon's book. Here speaks an orthodox-maverick lover of God and celebrator of life. We believe Bed and Board will be seized on with relief and joy by thousands of intelligent men and women who are becoming suffocated by pseudo-sociological cant. Father Capon cuts through and lets reality, flavor, pleasure, meaning-life-rush back in.
