Synopsis: From the Jacket: The untimely death of George Orwell early in 1950 removed from the literary scene a writer at the peak of his powers. With the publication last fall of his novel, Nineteen Eighty-Four, he had reached his widest audience with his greatest theme. At the time of his death Mr. Orwell was working on a collection of writings, the finished portion of which is presented in this posthumous volume.
In addition to the title sketch, which English critics agree is one of the best short pieces he has written, there are: "Lear, Tolstoy and the Fool," "Politics vs. Literature" (the subject of which is Gulliver's Travels), "Reflections on Gandhi," "Politics and the English Language," and two eye-witness accounts, "A Hanging" and "How the Poor Die."
GEORGE ORWELL first gained wide recognition in America with the publication of his satiric fable, Animal Farm. In addition to Nineteen Eighty-Four, his novels include Coming Up for Air, Burmese Days, and Down and Out in Paris and London. He died in London on January 21, 1950.
