Harbin's Ridge by Henry Giles Houghton Mifflin Co 1951
Title: Harbin's Ridge
Author: Henry Giles
Format: Hardcover
Publisher: Houghton Mifflin Co 1951
Size: 5.5 X 8.5 * 212 pages
Synopsis: From the Jacket: With a plainness and economy that comes from his own Kentucky Mountain background, Henry Giles tells the story of two men who were bound as close as the good and evil in man's soul, and of their friendship that was cursed before it ever began.
Jeff Harbin was a man whose hands were curved to fit the handle of a plow and whose feet walked easy down the furrow. The kind of man who liked to push his head against the sky; to wake just at first light and watch down the head of the holler while the morning mists smoke up through the trees, and listen while a cock crows the sun up over the farthest rim of the world.
Faleecy John was that kind of man too. Only there were stronger tides in him. He stood six foot four in his bare feet and his shoulders were so broad he had to angle to get through your door. He had a voice that roared like a bull when he was mad, but he could sing a ballad to his passing fancy and make it whisper like a lullaby.
From the time they were boys, Faleecy John was Jeff's protector and tormentor, his hero and his pursuing fate. In the end he became his betrayer. It is a story as old as the Kentucky hills themselves and as close to the core of life as the people who live there.
