IN 1540-41 when Coronado made his famous journey from far down in Mexico to what is now the American Southwest, he failed to find the cities with turquoise-studded walls and stores of golden vessels for which he had been searching; but the quest that lured him on has never died. Through the centuries the stories of these treasure hunts have reached the dimensions of folk legends, and Arthur L. Campa knows them all, for he is the heir of both Spanish and Anglo cultures.
Here in this book are tales of lost mines stacked with bars of gold, of mule loads of silver cached away in outlaw hoards, of fabulous Jesuit treasures buried when that order was expelled from New Spain, rediscovered by chance or by an old map found in some forgotten monastery-and somehow always lost again.
But not all these folk treasures are of material wealth. There is the story of a nun who loved a soldier and repented, and whose kneeling figure may still be seen as a rock formation on a mountain peak. There is the Hermit of Las Vegas, an actual person who traveled from Argentina to Quebec and finally settled in New Mexico and became the subject of affectionate legends.
These and many more stories are told in the leisured, effortless way of one who knows and understands the people and listens to the slow cadences of their informal talk. and yet in his own mind evaluates their beliefs in the light of a broad humanistic culture.
THE AUTHOR
ARTHUR L. CAMPA is chairman of the Department of Modern Languages in the University of Denver. He was born in Mexico and grew up on a West Texas ranch. His B.A. and M.A. degrees are from the University of New Mexico, his Ph. D. from Columbia. His many articles on Southwestern life and folklore have appeared in publications ranging from scholarly journals in the United States and Latin America to the Westerners' Brand Books.
THE ILLUSTRATOR
JOE BEELER of Sedona, Arizona, whose twelve paintings illustrate this book, has become in recent years one of the best known of Western artists. His oils have been widely exhibited, and his paintings and drawings appear in a number of University of Oklahoma Press books.
