Synopsis: From the Jacket: This book is primarily concerned with aiding visually impaired children in receiving and utilizing as fully as possible the input from their environments. The contents will help parents, educators and other community professionals to introduce the visually impaired child to his world and to make it come alive within the child's own framework of understanding.
The authors have synthesized information from a number of sources: psychological and learning theories, visits to residential and public school programs for visually impaired children throughout the United States, discussions with leaders in the education of visually handicapped children at national and other meetings, professional reading and daily experiences. Their involvement in learning situations for visually impaired children has helped them to develop a variety of meaningful experiences. These are set forth in this volume.
Emphasis is placed on realistic experiencing at home, school and in other settings, and guidelines are established whereby such experiencing can be increased and refined. Although particular focus is on the visually impaired child functioning at the preschool through elementary school level, the learning principles cited apply to older age/functioning levels, to children with other handicaps, and are relevant, as well, to children in general.
The first part of the text is geared primarily to early learning at home and school, both indoors and outdoors. The second section stresses meaningful involvement in the out-of-doors, with particular reference to the school camp experience. Bibliographies and lists of organizations round out the book's content. Appendices in regard to outdoor education and the school camp experience detail the organization of a school camp and offer specific program ideas.
