Title: Jewelry and Sculpture through Unit Construction
Author: Patricia Meyerowitz
Format: Hardcover
Publisher: Bonanza Books 1972
Edition: 2nd Edition
LCNN: 67-20232
Size: 7.5 X 10 * 96 pages
Synopsis: From the Jacket: Unit construction is an exciting approach to making jewelry and sculpture. Its basis is any metal unit, repeated to build up compound units or designs which can then be resolved into an earring or a pendant, or form part of a necklace or sculpture The use of such repeated units is central to the author's designs, and she finds it a stimulating starting point from which to explore the immense artistic possibilities opened up by her material.
Linking the units together demands both practical and creative talents. The practical aspect involves many of the techniques of metalworking such as drilling, filing, sawing, soldering and finishing, which are explained in a comprehensive chapter on tools and processes. The pre- formed units used vary from hollow sections and solid rods to blanks, stampings, washers and rivets, and these industrial parts and rejects are transformed into objects that vary from tough and chunky to enchanting, delicate patterns. The plate section shows how striking the jewelry and sculpture can be, and there are construction notes explaining the techniques used in the making of each piece.
Patricia Meyerowitz is a young artist who studied technical processes at the Central School for a short time before branching out on her own. She began by making jewelry, but for the last four years has widened her scope to include sculpture. Her work has been exhibited at several London galleries, including the I.C.A. and the Ewan Phillips, and has been recognised as a most promising new departure. The potentialities of her techniques and methods will intrigue and excite a wide range of designers and craftsmen, whether amateur or professional.
