Description

James Young’s The Bells (1926) stands as one of the more atmospheric and psychologically charged American silent films of the late 1920s. Adapted from the French play Le Juif Polonais (The Polish Jew) by Erckmann Chatrian, which had already been translated and adapted for the stage and screen multiple times, Young’s film presents a haunting meditation on guilt, conscience, and supernatural retribution. Its restrained yet evocative style, coupled with the intense performances of Lionel Barrymore and Boris Karloff, mark it as a fascinating intersection between melodrama, horror, and early psychological cinema. The film could be considered today as a Christmas horror movie.
