China is a multiracial country with 56 different nationalities. Besides Han as the main nationality, other 55 are ethnic minorities. Each minority has its own style of costumes, which are really brilliant and exquisite.
Yi is one of the 55 ethnic minorities, mainly distributed in mountain areas in the southwest part of China, where my hometown is located. Yi lives in a type of house of wood timbers battlement. The fire of fireplace ( a hollow dug on the ground) is never put off a year around in their houses. It is the living center of the family so called "Fireplace Culture". Yi’s nature is so forthright, they are good at drinking, singing, and dancing. They are always in colorful shining clothes. Their main holiday is the "Festival of Torch".
Yi people mainly make a living by doing agricultural work. In spare time, ingenious Yi women usually use colorful thread to embroider all kinds of patterns to make their dresses, shoes, and bags more beautiful. They choose natural things like flowers, birds and butterflies as patterns to embroider on their works, which look brightly colored and vivid. A woman who is good at embroidering can receive other people's respect. So costumes and embellishments of Yi people are not only things for wearing, but also exquisite handicrafts for collecting.
