Victorian Trade Card - Arbuckle Brothers Coffee Company - "REALISM OUTDONE" (#85)
SERIES: Satire
This is one of 100 cards featuring humorous cartoons and advertising the "Ariosa" brand of coffee that Arbuckles' issued in the late 1880s. All the illustrations were originally published in either Puck, Judge, or Texas Siftings, three of the more popular satirical periodicals of the day. Most typically aimed their derision at blacks, country "rubes", or the Irish. This particular card was based on an 1887 Puck cartoon drawn by Frederick B. Opper and features an artist who's apparently into the "method" school of painting.
The back shows the Arbuckles' factory buildings, dock, railroad cars, and a ship.
SIZE: 3" x 5"
DATE: Undated (but probably 1888 or 1889)
LITHOGRAPHER: Not identified
CONDITION: Very good+, I'd say. This card is lightly soiled with slightly worn edges and corners. There's a small fleck of white paper stuck to the front, just below the window near the right edge. (Please see scans.)
MULTIPLE ITEM SHIPPING DISCOUNT: I will ship up to 4 cards for the single base shipping charge shown. For purchases of more than 4 cards, the shipping charge will increase by just a small increment for every 4 additional cards.

REALISM OUTDONE
YOUNG STAINER
(the artist)--It is a
little awkward, old
fel., but I'm paint-
ing that incident in
Daniel Boone's life
where he was hung
up head down by
the Indians, and I
want to be thor-
oughly en rapport
with my subject.
From Puck, by permission.
