The Philippine sunburst symbolizes the organization's four campaigns in the Pacific and the Philippine Presidential Unit Citation during World War II. The color blue is used to represent the unit's two United States Presidential Unit Citations, World War II. The color blue with the bayonets also alludes to Infantry. Background: The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 8 Oct 1976. The insignia was cancelled on 1 April 1998. It was reinstated with the description updated, effective 1 September 2003.
